When you are immersed in a language, you learn while living life. Our language adventures sometimes lead us across the street for a fiesta with Mexican neighbors, or out of the country to Costa Rica.
Either way, we are immersed in learning by living and interacting with people in Spanish.
We want to give you an opportunity to immerse your students in Spanish with the Calico Spanish curriculum.
What Can I Expect from Calico Spanish?
Calico Spanish is a hands-on program, featuring real books, quality Spanish music, games and activities. Communicate with your students completely in Spanish starting from the first lesson by using our detailed teacher’s manual. Use our custom posters and flash cards to create a colorful display board featuring key concepts.
Our goal is to help you and your students develop conversational Spanish skills. We believe that teaching conversation is the best beginning step. Think about this: Do babies learn their native language by studying grammar first, or do they learn to use their native language in real life situations? Similarly, Calico Spanish keeps students and teachers focused on using Spanish in engaging games, activities and group interactions.
The Calico Spanish teacher's guide includes prepared lessons and scripts for you to follow. We actually give you a script for every portion of every lesson, so you can present the material at hand in Spanish. We also provide you with an English translation so that you can be sure of what you are saying to your students. Your students will decipher what is being said by observing gestures, visual aids, pantomime and by participating in demonstrations. You’ll give directions in Spanish, sing songs in Spanish, and teach about the calendar, animals, weather, and much more, all in Spanish. We believe in teaching via an interactive immersion method, and we equip you for success with immersion teaching strategies.
Each of the components of Calico Spanish was carefully selected or developed because it is engaging and uses only Spanish to present the topics. We are especially excited to share Courtney Berens’ cheerful artwork on all our own materials.
The Mi guitarrí: Spanish Songs for Kids CD features Joel Valle’s smooth voice, great guitar and 100% Spanish lyrics. Students will create song books and have an introduction to reading in Spanish as they learn to sing along to the Spanish songs. The English translations for all the songs on Mi guitarrí are located in the Mi guitarrí: Spanish Songs for Kids Songbook so that you have access to the translation if you need it. Teachers love to use the Mi Guitarrí Big Book of Lyrics when singing these songs with their students. The kids will learn what the song means as you make up actions together to become engaged with the music. Joel Valle is a talented musician and a native Spanish speaker. You will love his clear pronunciation and acoustic guitar accompaniment.
